Key Takeaways
- With no sign of a new Dead Space game or remake, fans are taking the series into their own hands.
- One such project, Deep Space, is attempting to build an entirely new Dead Space campaign within Discord using a bot.
- It is completely text-based and follows a new protagonist set between the first two Dead Space games.
Earlier this year, reports surfaced that a remake of Dead Space 2 was shelved due to poor sales, but EA later claimed it was never in development in the first place. Whatever the case, it looks like the series is back on track, but now that fans are hungry for more, they’re taking matters into their own hands.
One of those fans, llSCPll, has announced that they are developing a Dead Space game played entirely within Discord, called “Deep Space”. They explain that it is “running […] via a bot”, meaning it is text-based. However, it still has graphics and a sound engine rendered, with completely original elements.
“Deep Space is a free-to-play game and is predicted to have at least five to seven hours of play upon full release,” llSCPll said. “No direct profit is made from the game itself. We love Dead Space, and we know many of you do too. This passion project is our tribute to the series and adds our own twists to the storyline. Yes, DSDS is a true… time-based game, just like the other entries in Dead Space and has been thoroughly tested and optimized”.
Dead Space: Deep Space’s story follows a new protagonist
This fangame does not aim to continue Isaac Clarke’s story after the third game, but instead follows a new main character named Felix Everett. Set in 2509, it places it between the first two Dead Space games. We put ourselves in the shoes of this new crew as they investigate the Centauri space station after it has gone completely dark.
In the screenshots above you can see how the game works in practice. Felix has a health bar, stasis charges, and equipped weapons, all of which you can manage through the Discord bot. Despite being text-based, you can still use your weapons to chop up Necromorphs in real time, with your health, ammo and enemy status all relayed to you live.
Each room has a map with a dot depicting your character, complete with save stations so you can record your progress. It has all the survival horror features of Dead Space, only in Discord bot form. It’s an interesting experiment to say the least, but the biggest concern among many fans is how long such a project will survive before EA picks it up. Time will tell, but if you want to keep up with the project, you can join the Discord server here.
