New unboxing video reportedly reveals unannounced M4 MacBook Pro, benchmark results

Apple is expected to introduce new M4 Macs later this month, with an expected launch on November 1. However, a new unboxing video on YouTube claims to give our first look at the 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the M4 chip. There are a few interesting things worth mentioning here, including the first M4 Mac benchmark results…

The video was posted earlier today by Russian YouTuber Wylsacom (via Mark Gurman) and gives us the full unboxing experience of the M4 MacBook Pro.

The packaging shown in the video matches an alleged packaging leak from last month. The artwork has the same background as the M3 MacBook Pro models. After the packaging leak last month it is was reported that this M4 MacBook Pro unit was for sale in a private Facebook group.

The packaging also reveals that this M4 MacBook Pro has 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM, along with three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and MagSafe. According to the specifications on the packaging, the M4 chip has a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. This was also previously rumored and is an upgrade compared to the 8-core CPU design of the M3 chip.

It is striking that the current M3 MacBook Pro only has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and 8 GB of RAM. This leak suggests that the base model M4 MacBook Pro will have an additional Thunderbolt 4 port and double the RAM. Mark Gurman previously suggested that the M4 Macs could all start with 16GB of RAM for the first time.

Wylsacom also ran a Geekbench test, potentially giving us our first real look at the M4 chip’s performance. The results can be seen on the Geekbench website, which identifies the machine as “Mac 16.1.”

  • Single core score: 3864
  • Multicore score: 15288

For comparison, the base model M3 MacBook Pro typically scores around 3,000 on single-core tests and 11,800 on multi-core tests. Of course, keep in mind that the base M3 machine has two fewer CPU cores than the base M4.

Whether this leak ultimately turns out to be legitimate remains to be seen. Bloomberg reported today that Apple will announce its first M4 Macs “around the end of October,” with a release date scheduled for Friday, November 1.
